You might suffer a chip on one of your teeth when you attempt to use your teeth as tools, nibbling on pens, and pencils, or crunch down on ice. People who grind their teeth at night are also at increased risk of suffering a chipped tooth or a dental fracture.

To treat the damaged tooth enamel Dr. Gemma Dalton might be able to repair the tooth with a simple dental filling. This will call for a thorough examination, to make sure the internal structure of the tooth hasn’t been compromised.

Once this is done, Dr. Gemma Dalton will use a drill to carefully remove a small additional amount of tooth enamel. This will prepare the surface to anchor the eventual dental filling.

The material she recommend for the dental filling will be based on the tooth’s location and its appearance in your smile.

An amalgam filling will be dark in color making it a poor choice to repair a cavity in your smile. On the other end of the spectrum, composite dental fillings are made from a special resin material that can be shaded to seamlessly match the surrounding tooth enamel. This often makes them the superior choice for repairing a chip that will be visible in your smile.

Once the dental filling material has been applied and shaped Dr. Gemma Dalton will use a small ultraviolet light to cure it. This will cement its relationship with the surrounding tooth enamel and effectively restored the tooth’s function and appearance.
