The holiday season is upon us, and that makes it more important than ever to keep your mouth clean. Nobody wants to be self-conscious about their smile for holiday pictures, and definitely no one wants to add “taking care of a cavity” to their holiday to-do list! Here are some great tips to help make sure that doesn’t happen.

The first and most foundational part of mouth care is brushing your teeth. This should take 2 minutes, two times a day. That’s less time than many holiday songs. So turn on your favorite tune, and brush away! If you struggle to take enough time on your teeth, set a timer. Some electric toothbrushes even come with timers built-in, to ensure a quality clean.

The inextricable companion to brushing is flossing. Flossing, works to remove the food particles and plaque that your toothbrush cannot reach. Use only ADA-approved products that are  specifically intended for interdental cleaning. Flossing should take about 2-3 minutes each day.

Watch your food intake. Sugar and acids both damage your teeth, and are present in may foods and drinks. Acidic and sugary drinks include soda, energy drinks, sports drinks, fruit juice, wine, and most coffee beverages. The acids and sugars present in these drinks, along with other foods, contributes to enamel erosion, tooth decay, and cavities.
